Diversity is intersectional and one must account f Diversity is intersectional and one must account for the multiple layers of identities that co-exist and impact people, especially those who are more likely to be minoritised, marginalised, and/or oppressed.

In this specific example, we consider three dimensions of diversity (gender, disability, and race) to understand how they can contribute to a tri-burden of discrimination (sexism, ableism, and racism).

While the illustrated list of 'dimensions of diversity' here is not exhaustive, the addition of multiple layers of identities shows the compounded effect and burden on an individual's lived experiences.

It’s important to take an intersectional approach to inclusion because of the complex and cumulative way that multiple systems of oppression can overlap and adversely affect the experiences and lives of marginalised people.

Diversity is the state or fact of being different Diversity is the state or fact of being different and there are several dimensions of diversity that one can use to understand people’s different lived experiences.

We are born with some inherent markers of difference and then there are others which can be acquired throughout our lives. While this isn’t an exhaustive list, it gives us an idea of some of the pieces of our identity that can be shaped from birth (for e.g., race) and others by how we navigate life (for e.g., social mobility). With time, we adopt new identities, drop some, and develop others.

When one’s markers of difference puts them in a position of disadvantage in comparison to a dominant group, they are identified as a minority.

When a minoritised person experiences further exclusion and isolation based off social, political and/or economic reasons, they become marginalised.

Finally, when a marginalised person is subjected to prejudice, discrimination and/or unjust treatment, they experience oppression.

This provides a framework for intersectionality, wherein one can understand the compounded effect of disadvantage as a result of having multiple marginalised identities.

We’re halfway through our ‘Race and Ethnicity We’re halfway through our ‘Race and Ethnicity Allies Series’ for a client with a global audience, and here’s how our delegates are feeling!

What do you do when a colleague of yours is being racist?
How do you support a marginalised person without offending them?
How does one identify racial micro-aggressions at work?
Where do we draw the line between cultural appropriation and appreciation?

These are all common questions we get asked as D&I consultants, and to address all of them in a safe and empathetic way, we’ve built the ‘Race and Ethnicity Allies Series’.

This is a four-step programme that begins with boosting awareness around: language and terminologies; cultural nuances including stereotyping, appropriation, appreciation, and assimilation; the different dimensions of diversity that can lead to marginalisation and oppression; and acknowledging the compounded effect of intersectional identities. We then deep dive into discussing scenarios wherein bias, micro behaviours, racism and ethnic-discrimination are covert, subtle and possibly fleeting; how does one step up as an ally in such events? The programme equips delegates with the necessary tools to become active and sustainable allies who are anti-racist.
