Friendships Sometimes Hard for Children with Disabilities

Someone once said, “"I believe in angels, the kind Heaven sends. I am surrounded by angels, but I call them my best friends." Children with disabilities face a lot of challenges in their lives--physical, sensory, cognitive or communicative.  But one challenge that can be particularly difficult to navigate is how to create friendships.  Friendships create a sense of acceptance and build self esteem for children with disabilities. 

Many parents know it’s a priority to give their child opportunities to learn and gain as much knowledge and understanding of the world around them as possible.  Some parents read to their children, other work hard to find the best schools, therapists or resources for their kids.  But where does the child’s social education fit in? 

Today’s parents have a lot on their plates with school, special education or therapy sessions, sports, fitness issues etc., etc.  Addressing their kids emotional I.Q.

is another important element needed in the mix.  Some would argue that it is as important or more than some of the other activities.  In fact, research has shown that children who do well socially in their elementary school years will perform better academically and have better social skills as adults.

What can we do to ease into this education and how can we accommodate children’s special needs? This important question was address by The Adult Facilitation of Social Integration Study conducted by the University of Michigan and represents the first study of its kind focusing on children with disabilities and social development.

One important lesson from this study was that children with disabilities report less conflict in their friendships when parents arrange outings with other children.  This was not true in children developing without a disability.

 So helping children to find friends and ensuring they have regular playdates should be part of their regular routine.  It’s just as valuable as the formal education they are gaining.  It teaches them about life. 

There are a number of places you can find friends for your children.  They may meet someone at the park playground.  A parent may know someone with children the same age as their children.  The neighbor children may make good playmates.  Additionally, there are lots of social groups for moms and kids.  The added benefit of helping your child to make friends is that the parent just may make a friend with the other child’s parent as well. 

So parents of children with disabilities, put on their play clothes, get some games organized and invite some kids over to have some silly, joyful and--as it turns out--not so frivolous fun.

A Wonderful IDEA – For Children With Disabilities

Children with disabilities deserve an education. When given the opportunity to learn at their level, they, too, can be productive members of society.

And thanks to IDEA, or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, children with disabilities no longer have to suffer with social stigmas or go unnoticed. Not only can they receive acknowledgment for their special needs, they can receive a quality education as well.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is not a new concept. It has been around for a quite a while. It was recently update in 2004 to keep up with the current trends of our time.

According to the revision, all people with disabilities must receive "a free, appropriate public education." The plan ought to be conducted within the disabled person's IEP or Individualized Education Program, which deals with the person's needs in the Least Restrictive Environment.

So what does that mean?

That means public schools need to ensure they have the capability to teach children with disabilities, and therefore must provide the proper learning instruments to be able to do so.

Learning instruments include study aids created specifically for children with disabilities and modifications made on standardized tests to fit the learning level or test-taking capacity of disabled children. The IDEA further establishes that such a child require special education and other related services.

This program is molded specifically for the child with disabilities, if the child is found to be eligible under the IDEA. According to the law, the program is designed to include a general education teacher, a school administrator, a school psychologist or standardized testing specialist, a teacher trained in special education should the child require a special education program, and the child's parents. The program also includes benchmarks, as well as goals to track the child's progress.

And most important of all, the act establishes that all children with disabilities receive education from pre-school to secondary school, along with education related services at no cost to the child's parents or guardians. However, there may be fees imposed for the care of disabled toddlers or infants.
